In 2008, Canterbury Operatic Society performed one of the best-loved musical shows of the twentieth century, My Fair Lady.  Based on George Bernard Shaw's classic play, Pygmalion, it's the story of a common flower girl who is taken on by a professor of language.  He teaches her to speak and behave like a lady, and he soon becomes accustomed to her face...  Almost every song in the show is a classic, including 'Wouldn't It Be Loverly', 'The Rain in Spain', 'I Could Have Danced All Night', 'On the Street Where You Live' and 'Get Me to the Church on Time'.

 

For this show, our director was Stephen Cresswell, our musical director was Diana Whybrow and our choreographer was Pippa Smith.  Performances took place at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury, where audience reaction was extremely enthusiastic, leading to sold out performances on the Saturday.

Elaine Godden in the Kentish Gazette praised many aspects of the production. She said that musically, the show was "faultless", while the costumes and choreography were "delightful". Speaking of the production in general she said "Shaw's Pygmalion explored issues of class and feminism, making it ripe for its 20th century adaptation. The operatic society, in the 21st century, demonstrated its timelessness."
